EMDR Explained and Explored
EMDR refers to Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy. While the name is rather long, it’s a pretty accurate description of the treatment when you understand the principles by which it works.
The goal of EMDR is to prevent memories of trauma from making you feel as if you are reliving them when they get triggered. The idea is that symptoms such as flashbacks happen because the brain hasn’t stored a traumatic memory in the way it stores memories normally, and we need to help it reprocess the memory. During the treatment, you won’t be asked to relive the memory, only to focus on an aspect of the event or thought that you’re trying to change your feelings about. At the same time, a mental health practitioner will engage bilateral stimulation such as eye movements that engage the brain’s memory storage process.
Undergo Treatment Today
EMDR is a popular approach both because it avoids forcing a client to relive a traumatic event and because it works quickly. Although each person is different and we monitor each client’s progress to determine when more treatment is needed, EMDR often only takes three to six sessions.
While EMDR is quite effective, it may help to use other treatment methods alongside it. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can help clients identify and challenge beliefs that lead them toward unhelpful behaviors and replace them with positive ones.
